Young Kirkcaldy woman awarded for work to overcome mental health struggles

A Kirkcaldy woman has received a prestigious award from The Princes Trust for her work in overcoming her mental health struggles and creating a career she's proud of.

Rachel Bryson, 21, has suffered with her mental health, self confidence and social anxiety in particular, since school. She left in fifth year due to a significant dip.

It worsened during the pandemic, completing her college studies at home and she then became the full time carer for her mum and dad.

Her mum has chronic ill health and her dad, the usual carer, suffered his own health problems.

The Prince's Trust presented her with their young achiever award, which recognises an inspiring young person who has overcome significant barriers to gain employment.

She said: "I’m really proud of myself and grateful for the support I received from The Prince’s Trust.

“My confidence has improved so much since I first joined The Trust. I still use some of the techniques and skills I learned and apply them when I’m working. The support I got changed my life."

She came to the charity in 2021 looking to build her confidence and become work ready, having had to put her life on hold during Covid-19.

She says the support changed her life and is happy with where her life is at right now, working at Boots full time.

She added: "The Prince’s Trust helped remove barriers for me. The biggest one was mental health. My social anxiety wasn’t helping me move forward, so being able to access therapy was invaluable. I learned new techniques to help manage my anxiety and how to meditate."

She took part in a range of employability programmes and eventually secured a full-time job with Boots. She has been there for over a year, impressing colleagues and management with her excellent attitude and improved confidence.

Jo Murphy, vice president sustainability and corporate responsibility director at TJX Europe, said: "We are thrilled to support the Young Achiever Award, and to celebrate inspirational stories from across the UK.

"Through our longstanding partnership with The Prince’s Trust, we’re proud to help young people overcome barriers to build a better future for themselves and have a positive impact in their communities. Congratulations to Rachel and all the winners for their amazing achievements."
