Warning to Fife drivers as part of A92 to shut over two weekends

The A92 will shut near Glenrothes this weekend - as the final phase of a major revamp of the Balfarg junction gets under way.

The project began in March, and so far a new pedestrian crossing, new kerbing and upgraded safety barriers have been introduced.

The next phase of the project will see the entire junction, as well as a significant length of the A92, resurfaced and reinstated with a new permanent road layout that will tie in with the new traffic signals.

Workers will also install new traffic signals, road markings and carriageway traffic sensors.

The final phase began today and will take about four weeks to complete.

A series of restrictions will be in place as follows:

  • Monday May 24 – B969 Western Avenue will be closed to northbound A92 traffic continuously for one week (left turns from A92 northbound into Western Avenue shall not be permitted for the duration of this phase). A signed, local diversion will divert northbound traffic wishing to access B969 Western Avenue off the A92 at Preston Roundabout and along A911 Queensway to the B969 Western Avenue Junction. A 10mph convoy system will also be in operation on the A92 southbound between 7.30pm and 6.30am for one week. The convoy system will be removed outwith working hours.
  • Saturday May 29-Sunday May 30 – The A92 will be closed in both directions between the B969 and Preston Roundabout from 6am on Saturday until 8pm on Sunday. All traffic will be diverted via B969 Western Avenue and A911 Queensway. The diversion route will be unaffected during this phase of the project and will be fully open. Local access to junctions between the closure points will be maintained.
  • Monday June 7 - A 10mph convoy system will be in operation on the A92 southbound between 7.30pm and 6.30am for one week. The convoy system will be removed outwith working hours.
  • Saturday June 12 to Sunday June 13 – The A92 will be closed in both directions between the B969 and Preston Roundabout from 6am Saturday until 8pm Sunday. All traffic will be diverted via B969 Western Avenue and A911 Queensway. Local access to junctions between the closure points will be maintained.

Drivers are being warned that there could be delays of up to 10 minutes.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s north-east representative, said: "We are pleased to see the final phase of this major road safety improvement project on the A92 at Balfarg Junction getting underway.

"Once complete, the project will help improve road safety in the area for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and any other road users.

"The traffic management planned for the final phase of works is essential for keeping everyone safe during the last few sections of work.

"The weekend closures are required to allow teams to carry out surfacing improvements on the south side of the junction, and teams will do all they can to keep any disruption to a minimum as much as possible.

"It is important that road users keep to the restricted speed limits to ensure their safety and the safety of our workforce.

"We would like to thank motorists and residents around the junction for their continued patience during this project and advise them to plan ahead by checking Traffic Scotland for up to date journey information and leave some extra time to reach their destination."
