Voter Registration Deadline Looms

Potential voters are being urged to check if they are registered

Fifers are being reminded to check that they are eligible to vote this year.

Fife council is reminding people that midnight on Monday 20th of April is the deadline. If you are applying for a postal vote, the deadline is 5pm on Tuesday 21st April.

As well as the Westminster election, voters in the Dunfermline South council ward are choosing a new councillor.

To register as a Parliamentary elector you have to be resident in the UK and be a British, Irish Republic or qualifying Commonwealth citizen. A qualifying Commonwealth citizen is a Commonwealth citizen who has leave to remain in the UK, or does not require such leave.

Linda Bissett, Electoral Registration Officer for Fife, said:

"It’s important that residents across Fife and the Dunfermline South Council ward make sure they can take part.

"The electoral register continues to be updated and if you’re circumstances have recently changed, such as moving to another address, it’s important you make sure that your registration details are up to date, otherwise you may not be able to vote."

Recent research conducted by YouGov for the Electoral Commission found that 21% of people who rent privately think they’re automatically registered to vote if they pay council tax, while 40% of those surveyed think it is not possible to register to vote online in England, Scotland and Wales.
