Thousands of Fife homes without broadband after damage to fibre cable

Thousands of homes in Fife have been left without broadband after a fibre cable was damaged.

Openreach says that the damage was caused by third party work installing a crash barrier on the A92.

Around 4,500 households in Auchtermuchty, Cupar, Letham and Strathmiglo have been affected.

The firm has apologised for the disruption.

Although some temporary services have been provided, repair work is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Openreach said: "Third party works to install a crash barrier on the A92 caused damage to a fibre cable last night, affecting broadband for around 4,500 households in the Cupar, Letham, Auchtermuchty and Strathmiglo areas.

"Engineers worked through the night to provide some temporary services where possible and work on repairs is continuing.

"We expect most services to be restored later today and into the early hours of tomorrow.

"We’re sorry for any disruption caused by this unexpected outage and encourage anyone affected to report it to their service provider."

The Courier reports that BEAR Scotland, who maintain and manage the trunk road on behalf of Transport Scotland, has been installing new road safety barriers on the A92 in Ladybank.

A spokesperson for BEAR Scotland said: "Our teams are currently installing new road safety barriers on the A92 in Ladybank.

"Regrettably, there’s been some minor damage to a BT cable, however the cable is currently being repaired."

In an update issued on Friday, Openreach said repairs were completed late on Thursday night, with services restored around midnight.

The firm says anyone still experiencing any issues should contact their service provider for support.
