Fake Fag Sniffer Dog Smells Success

Dixie the sniffer dog uncovered 2 batches of illicit tobacco

Mould, arcenic and rat poison are among the chemicals found - by Fife trading standards officers - in counterfeit cigarrettes.

They are warning smokers in the Kingdom to stay away from illegal fake fags.

Two batches of suspect tobacco were found recently during a day of inspections with HM Revenue and Customs - with the help of their newest team member, DIxie the sniffer dog.

Lead Officer Dawn Adamson said: "Dixie has been trained by Stirling Council to sniff out the scent of tobacco products and is able to assist officers in finding hidden or concealed stashes in more unusual places. Our Intellectual Property Enforcement Group is exploring new ways to detect and prevent the sale of illegal tobacco. Dixie has proven to be an extremely valuable asset.

"Cheaper but illegal tobacco makes it easier for children to start smoking, takes advantage of cash-strapped families, and can help fund organised crime.  We would urge the public to make us aware of anyone they think may be involved in the sale of such products."
