Sturgeon To Make First Leader's Speech

It's the end of an era at the Scottish National Party.

Yesterday delegates confirmed Nicola Sturgeon as their new leader, with Stewart Hosie as her deputy.

This afternoon the First Minister-elect will make her first keynote speech since taking over from Alex Salmond.

Ms Sturgeon is expected to outline her vision for the party after Independence was rejected, but with support at an all-time high.

Labour’s Shadow Scottish Secretary, Margaret Curran MP, says the SNP are beign "arrogant" and "taking voters for granted."

She said: "Alex Salmond is all but declared as a candidate to return to the UK Parliament, and Nicola Sturgeon counting the seats at Westminster, before she’s even said what her MPs would do there.

"They lost the referendum and have been running a victory lap around Scotland for the past two months.

"And now they’re assuming victory in May, without even thinking about what policies they’ll put to the Scottish people.

"I want the Labour Party to win in May so we can reverse the damage caused by the Tories, and make working people better off.

"Nicola Sturgeon says that people should vote for her party, so she can support the Labour Party.

"But she won’t agree with a single Labour policy.

"The party that let Margaret Thatcher in the back door of Downing Street in 1979 are asking working people across Scotland to trust them to act in their best interests."
