'Stay Seen, Stay Safe', Police Urge Cyclists

Cycle accident rates are higher during winter

Police in Fife are urging cyclists to invest in good lights if they're considering using their bike during the winter months.

It is in response to a number of complaints officers in St Andrews have had from other road users of cyclists disobaying the rules of the road, and not making themselves seen.

As the nights get darker and colder, there's traditionally an increase in accidents involving bikes at this time of year.

St Andrews University Liaison Officer, PC Norman Hill said:"We have had many instances reported to us from members of the public concerned about cyclists failing to obey traffic signs, cycling without safety helmets and of course, cycling during the hours of darkness without lights.

"We hope that by working together in this way that we can enhance the safety of our many road users and prevent them from coming to harm especially during the darker evenings."

On the spot fines can be issued to cyclists found to be breaking the law, but officers say they hope not to resort to distributing them. They are starting an action plan designed to improve this situation and will be routinely engaging with cyclists in the town to offer them guidance and safety advice.
