Social Work Review Into Mikaeel's Death

An independent multi-agency case review has been launched into the events around the death of Mikaeel Kular.

The three year old's mother Rosdeep Adekoya admitted the culpable homicide of her son, and will be sentenced on August 25.

The councils, NHS and Police in Fife and Edinburgh will be scrutinised, along with the Scottish Children's Reporter Administration and Fife Child Protection Committee.

 

The joint Chief Officers Group of Fife and City of Edinburgh includes representatives from:

• Police Scotland

• Fife Council

• City of Edinburgh Council

• Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration

• Fife NHS

• Lothian and Borders NHS

• Fife Child Protection Committee

Independent Chair of Fife Child Protection Committee John Myles commented: 

“The joint Chief Officers Group of Fife and City of Edinburgh has decided to conduct a significant case review following the tragic death of Mikaeel Kular. 

“The review will be led independently and will take place in two phases. The first phase will look at information available from files, records, and policies and procedures that were in place before Mikaeel’s death. 

“Work on this phase has already started. Phase two will take into account any new information that has come to light during the criminal proceedings and will involve interviews with relevant staff. We are aiming to announce the findings by December.

Scottish Liberal Democrats in Fife have welcomed the announcement of a significant independent multi-agency case review into events around the tragic death of Mikaeel Kular.

Fife Liberal Democrat leader Tim Brett,and previous chair of the social work committee until May 2012, said Mikaeel's death was "sorely felt by all the community in Fife"

He said: "This wide-ranging and thorough review is in keeping with what the Liberal Democrat group wished to see implemented. We look forward to the findings being announced in December so that all agencies can move swiftly to learn any and all lessons from Mikaeel Kular's tragic death. This is what is needed to reassure people in Fife and beyond that the highest standards are being maintained in these key services."
