Car Smoking Ban Passes First Test

The Bill to ban smoking in cars while children are present has been backed initially

The Scottish Government have backed the bill to ban smoking in cars with children under the age of 18.

It is widely known that tobacco smoke can cause respiratory problems in people of any age but this can be much more aggressive in young adults and children while they are still growing.

Campaigners have welcomed the unanimous vote on the ban. The Bill, which prohibits smoking in a vehicle with children has passed its first hurdle and will be welcomed by many, including ASH Scotland Chief Executive, Sheila Duffy:

" We know that second-hand tobacco smoke is harmful and that it can reach very high levels when someone smokes in a car. Scottish survey results indicate around one fifth of 13 to 15 year olds are exposed to tobacco smoke during car journeys"
