Bayoh Family Slam Police 'Smear Tactics'

Sheku Bayoh was detained on Hayfield Road in Kirkcaldy

The family of a Fife man who died in police custody have described recent newspaper reports about one of the arresting officers as 'very unhelpful'.

Sheku Bayoh was detained by around 12 officers in Kirkcaldy in May. PC Nicole Short is said to be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and facial paralysis.

Investigations by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner are ongoing, and the police aren't commenting on the matter.

Sheku's relatives say police are 'creating an environment of doubt. His brother in law Ade Johnson says speculation and rumours are not helpful, and that the family would much prefer it stopped until the whole investigation is concluded:

Following a meeting with the family of Sheku Bayoh at Bute House, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “I can only imagine the pain and distress the family has gone through since their loss and I took the opportunity to express my sincere condolences to them.

“While we cannot comment on the investigation itself, myself and Justice Secretary Michael Matheson listened carefully to the concerns raised and I expressed my determination that the family be provided with the answers they deserve.”
