Scottish Women's Football welcome Raith Rovers apology for signing David Goodwillie

Scottish Women's Football has welcomed Raith Rovers making an apology for signing David Goodwillie.

The Kirkcaldy side announced today that Goodwillie will not be selected for the club and in a statement on their website today, Raith Rovers said that they made the wrong decision to sign him.

Goodwillie and a former team-mate of his at another football club David Robertson were branded as rapists in a civil court case in 2017 and were ordered to pay £100,000 in damages to a woman.

The apology has been welcomed by many including Val McDermid, who announced the end of her lifelong support for the club on Tuesday.

But today, the well known writer said on Twitter that the club's statement is only "the first step on a long road back".

There have been many resignations since the transfer was announced on Monday, including from Tyler Rattray, who was the captain of the women's Raith Rovers team.

Scottish Women's Football previously said they were giving support to the women's and girls sides after they ended their association with the Kirkcaldy club.

Vivienne MacLaren, its chair, said before the club made this morning's statement that it's important for the women's game to be supported:

After the club's statement today, the chief executive of Scottish Women's Football has been telling Kingdom FM that she welcomes the club making the apology.

But Aileen Campbell says that Raith Rovers has a lot of work to do to rebuild trust.

She tells us that the women's and girls teams need time to think about what they want to do for the future:
