Scottish exams are cancelled, says Education Secretary

John Swinney has addressed the Scottish Parliament and advised that national exams will not go ahead this academic year.

Exam grades for school students will be awarded based on coursework, predicted grades and previous attainment in each subject.

This development follows the First Minister's announcement that schools across the country will close tomorrow to help prevent the further spread of coronavirus.

Mr Swinney also said that vulnerable children and children of 'key workers', such as NHS staff, will be supported by their local authority.

Councils will provide childcare and learning for the children who fall into these categories.

It will allow parents of 'key workers' who do not have another parent, guardian or carer to look after their children during the day to continue working.
