Scottish 'Clare's Law' Group To Meet

Plans to introduce a scheme allowing people to find out if their partner has a history of domestic abuse will take a major step forward.

The first meeting of the Clare’s Law pilot group will consist of representatives from the Scottish Government, Police Scotland, the Crown Office, and Scottish Women's Aid.

Last month, The First Minister confirmed a version of ‘Clare’s Law’ – a disclosure scheme named after a woman who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend – would be extended north of the border after being introduced in England and Wales.

The law would allow someone to contact the police to find out iftheir partner has a previous history of domestic abuse or other violent acts.

Police would also be able to disclose other information abouta person of concern in particular circumstances.

There are around 60,000 domestic abuse incidents recorded in Scotland every year, nearly a third of all individuals convicted of domestic abuse have at least one previous domestic abuse conviction.
