Scotland's Biggest Power Station 'Could Close'

The owners of Longannet in Fife are considering the move due to the cost of connecting to the national grid.

Scottish Power says it's at a disadvantage to other UK plants because of its location.  It cost the firm £40M to connect to the grid, while a plant in the south of England costs £4M.

The Fife based coal firing station creates enough electricity for 2 million homes - that's just under half of Scotland.
Scottish Power says there are no plans to close Longannet, but to avoid that they have to improve its finances.

The National Grid says it's working with the industry regulator Ofgem to review the charging regime.

260 people are employed by the power station.

Lang Banks, the Director of WWF Scotland, welcomes the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy but agrees that both Scottish Power and the Scottish government need to focus on the potential economic impact of closing the station.
