Safety Campaigners Warn Of Quarry Dangers

18 year old John McKay was found dead at Prestonhill quarry on Friday

Parents should warn their children of the dangers of swimming in quarries this summer.

That's the message from campaigners, following the death of 18 year old John McKay at Prestonhill quarry in Inverkeithing. It's the second death at the same site - Cameron Lancaster died in August after taking part in an ice bucket challenge. Local politicians are seeking to use new legislation to take control of the site and fill it in.

Michael Dunn is from the Royal Life Saving Society, he has this advice for anyone who finds themselves in trouble.

Local councillor Alice McGarry has met with MSP for Mid Fife and Scotland Annabelle Ewing to discuss the possibility of using the Community Empowerment Act to take control of the quarry and fill it in. The law lets certain bodies to buy abandoned or neglected land. Ms Ewing will write to the Chief Executive of Fife council, Steve Grimmond, concerning the safety of the site. She hopes they can put pressure on the landowner of the quarry.
