Safeguarding Town Centre Future

In the wake of Tesco's announcement to leave the town, Kirkcaldy's Ambitions Partnership Group is looking to get key people round the table.

Members also want to press ahead with a blueprint called Time for Action'.

Support is being offered to the 189 Tesco staff who are at risk of redundancy and they're encouraging people to sign an online petition calling for the store to remain open.

Meetings are also being sought with Tesco, the Post Office, Threadneedle Street, which runs The Postings Shopping Centre, and it is also keen to speak to all the other major supermarket retailers across town about their plans going ahead.

Its key aims include retaining the Post Office in the heart of the town centre.

Harry Cormie, Chairman of Kirkcaldy4All said: "The community support to try to keep Tesco in town has been outstanding, and we are fully behind all the moves to persuade them to stay or at least give us the opportunity to put forward alternatives to closure.

"But we are also determined to keep our plans for Kirkcaldy town centre firmly on track.

"The work put into a number of projects over the past two years is coming to fruition, there is a bright future for our town centre which is why we need to get the message across to people that they need to use it.

"We have suffered the loss of a number of national chain stores but these decisions are not because Kirkcaldy is failing as a town - they were taken on a national basis.

"Kirkcaldy is actually growing. We have a lot of positive messages we need to get across to change perceptions, and the plans of the Ambitions group form part of that."
