Running For Cancer Charities

Richard Davison

A Dunfermline man who lost his wife to cancer just three months ago is preparing to raise cash to fight breast cancer.

Richard Davison , a sport science Professor at the University of the West of Scotland, is running the Edinburgh Marathon Relay as part of a team of four runners in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The team will take on the 26 mile Hairy Haggis Team Relay on Sunday 31 May 2015 and have set a fundraising target of £2,000 to help fund ground-breaking breast cancer research. The race, part of the Edinburgh Marathon Festival, will start at Regents Road in Edinburgh and finish at Musselburgh.

Richard lost his wife Samantha to breast cancer in February this year and he has chosen to support Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer to pay tribute to her.

He says: “I’m doing the New Moon Walk with my daughter for which we have already raised £2,000 but the Edinburgh Team Relay is a challenge that is just for me.  I’m more of a cyclist than a runner so I’m training hard for the event – I don’t want to let the team down.

“We hope to raise as much money as possible to help beat breast cancer. My wife Sam bravely fought the disease for over nine years and I know that she passionately believed in helping others so I want to honour her by raising money for the charity.  So many people are affected by breast cancer so it’s crucial that we continue to support vital research and help save lives.”

Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer have joined forces to become the biggest breast cancer charity in Europe, committed to ending the disease once and for all. We’re determined that by 2050, no one will die from breast cancer. And with your help we can save more lives sooner.

Niamh O’Shea, Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, says: “We really appreciate the hard work of all our dedicated supporters and Richard and his team every success in completing the relay and reaching their fundraising target. We believe breast cancer can be stopped. And we believe that research holds the key. It is down to the hard work of inspiring supporters like Richard that we can invest in life-saving breast cancer research, and together we are determined to stop breast cancer taking the women we love.”
