School's £1 A Day Charity Eating Challenge

Cardenden Primary is trying to gain 'Rights Respecting' status from UNICEF

Pupils at a Fife primary school are being taught the rights of children worldwide, with the aim of winning an award from a major charity.

Teachers and pupils at Cardenden Primary are raising money for UNICEF, with some staff taking part in the charity's Live Below The Line challenge, by spending no more than £5 on their food shopping.

The Unicef UK Rights Respecting Schools Award supports schools across the UK to embed children’s rights in their ethos and culture. The award recognises achievement in putting the UN Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s policy and practice. It is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. The charity is asking people to spend no more than £1 per day on food and drink - excluding water - and to use the experience to change their perspectives and behaviours.

Angela Hutchison, a school support assistant, said:

"We are working towards becoming a rights respecting school and decided to raise funds for a big charity and a charity closer to home, for which we chose Kirkcaldy Foodbank. All the money raised from this challenge will go to UNICEF. It will highlight how lucky we are here in our every day life as well as the amount of food that we waste and how little people have to live on in other countries."
