Rallies Against Austerity

Campaigners from Fife will join thousands for a protest against austerity measures later.

Various groups, trade unions, and workers will call for an end to UK Government budget cuts at Peoples' Assembly events being held in Glasgow and London.

The Conservatives plan to reduce spending by £12billion to reduce the country's deficit.

Tam Kirby, from the Fife branch of the People's Assembly says people here are feeling the brunt of the axe:

Speaking to the Rally STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith will say:

“Today we send out a clear message to the Governments in Westminster and Edinburgh - we refuse to accept that there is no alternative to austerity.

“We know that austerity makes no economic sense. We know that its primary purpose is ideological. It is intended to entrench the economic and political power of a self-interested, privileged elite.

“It is the same ideology that is behind Tories unjust and undemocratic attack on the trade union movement.

“Their strike ballot plans are an outright attack on the fundamental, democratic right of workers to withdraw their labour. They are a violation of ILO conventions, an affront, not just to workers’ rights, but to our human rights and civil liberties.
