Race Charity Plea For "Facts" About Kirkcaldy Death

Sheku Bayoh, 31, became a father in January

Race awareness campaigners say it's vital all the facts are known about an African man's death in police custody in Kirkcaldy.

FRAE Fife are concerned about the number of conflicting stories surrounding Sheku Bayoh's death.

The 31 year old died on Sunday shortly after being detained by officers between 7 and 8am - a policewoman was injured in the process.

The Police Investigations and review Commissioner (PIRC) is investigating his contact with officers.

Police Scotland have described it as "a tragic set of circumstances".

Adnan Miyasar is chair of the charity:

Fife divisional commander, Chief Superintendent Garry McEwan, said: “This is a tragic set of circumstances and my condolences go to the man’s family.”

"The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal service are responsible for investigating deaths in Scotland.

"They have instructed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner to lead on the inquiry."

The PIRC is appealing for information from any potential witnesses, ands says as this is a live investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further.

In a statement, The PIRC said:

"A report on the PIRC’s findings will be submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Sercice in due course.

"As this is a live investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.

Witnesses can contact the PIRC on 01698 542929 or 01698 543291
