Proposed Library Closures Reflect Budget Restraints

Fife Cultural Trust are currently proposing the closure of 16 libraries in the Kingdom, including in Markinch, Kinghorn and Crail.

The review of library services in Fife was considered by members at this weeks Kirkcaldy Area Committee meeting.

The Committee discussed Fife Cultural Trust’s proposals to move to a new operating model that they say would make the service sustainable and ensure it delivers on its required financial savings.

However, it would also mean closing 16 of Fife’s 51 libraries, reviewing library opening hours and mobile library routes, and standardising the range of services offered across the library network.

Chair of the Committee, Neil Crooks said:

"A 12-week public consultation is now under way and the Committee urge local residents to get involved and tell us about how they would like to access services in the future.

The results of this consultation will help the Council’s Executive Committee to decide on whether to accept, reject or make changes to the Trust’s proposal."
