Professor: no plans for tougher lockdown rules

Scotland's national clinical director says there are currently no plans to bring in stricter rules to force people to follow lockdown guidelines.

People are being urged not to go out over Easter weekend in order to continue to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Yesterday, politicians said restrictions would stay in place for the foreseeable future, with the peak of deaths in the UK not yet in sight.

At the moment people can only leave their homes to shop for essentials, to seek medical care, for one bit of exercise per day, and for essential work they cannot do at home.

The rules are enforceable by police, but they will normally only fine people who deliberately flout the rules after being told to go home.

Kingdom FM News ran a poll yesterday, asking whether people supported the extension of the lockdown rules:

Many told us they wanted to see even stricter rules being put in place, to prevent people from leaving their homes completely, other than for essential reasons.

Some countries have banned things like outdoor exercise in an attempt to slow the spread further.

We put those views to Professor Jason Leitch, one of the most familiar faces of the Scottish Government's campaign encouraging people to comply with the guidelines.
