Post Office Future

Gordon Brown has revealed six businesses want to take over the running of Kirkcaldy's main Post Office.

The future of it was plunged into doubt when the adjoining Tesco superstore in The Postings closed in March.

Customers have been promised a period of consultation on future plans before a final decision is made on the exact location and the operator.

Currently the main Post Office is located on a temporary basis in The Postings and the move to permanent accommodation is scheduled to take place in the next few months.

A Post Office spokesman told Mr Brown in a letter: "The premises in The Postings will be a temporary arrangement until we have identified a successful candidate and a suitable permanent location.

"It is not possible to say how long it will be until the branch is moved permanently. Currently we have been engaging with six applicants in the High Street area and scoping their premises for suitability.

"Once our recruitment process is complete and we have selected a successful new operator we will undertake a period of public consultation notifying the community of our plans and enabling feedback.

"If the decision is taken to proceed with the relocation, subject to the outcome of public consultation, we would then be in a position to advise on timescale and an opening date for the new branch."

"Mr Brown said: "I will continue to monitor the service the main Post Office produces. Around 4,000 people, mainly elderly, use it every week. It is vital it remains in a prominent location in the vicinity of the High Street.

"While the temporary arrangements have been paid for by Tesco the long-term arrangements need to be the subject of an open discussion in the town. Having initially been part of the campaign to save the main Post Office I will, of course, do all I can to keep local people informed of developments."
