Possible Independence Vote

A possible second referendum on Scottish independence has been mooted by the SNP.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says she'll put forward a timetable, and the conditions, for a vote ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections next year. The announcement comes following months of pressure for her to clarify the party's position.

Independence was rejected last year by 55% to 45%. A YouGov survey for The Times, which was published yesterday, showed that Scots still remain sceptical about separation with 52% saying they would vote no, compared to 48% of people who said they'd back a yes vote.

Opposition parties have responded angrily and have accused Ms Sturgeon of breaking her promise of a 'once-in-a-generation' referendum.

Since the independence result, the SNP has gained thousands of new members and won a landslide 56 out of 59 Scottish seats in May's general election.
