Police Scotland yet to receive reports of serious sexual assault allegations in St Andrews

Police Scotland says it has yet to receive any reports of serious sexual assault allegations in St Andrews.

The force is continuing to work with St Andrews University after reports of sexual violence were made on a social media account.

St Andrews Survivors' Instagram page has featured stories of people's experiences of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment.

The account was set up to allow people a voice to describe what they have went through.

A meeting has already taken place between the proctor of the University and the creator of the social media page.

They discussed how they can work together to signpost support and reporting mechanisms to students.

The institution says its primary concern is to make sure Survivors are aware they are ready and willing to support their decisions and take action, facilitate police reporting and providing ongoing support.

Police say victims will receive support and any reports will be investigated.

Detective Inspector Kelly McEwan from the Fife Division Public Protection Unit said: "We will always treat reports of sexual offences with the utmost sensitivity and professionalism.

"Victims will be supported and any reports will be thoroughly investigated.

"I want to encourage anyone who has been the victim of a sexual crime not to hesitate and to call us on 101 or 999 in emergency.

"Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
