Police Investigators Seeking Witnesses Of Sheku Arrest

Sheku Bayoh died in police custody last week

Witnesses are being sought at the scene where a young man from Fife who died in police custody was arrested.

Sheku Bayoh from Kirkcaldy died not long after being arrested last Sunday evening. Police investigators are returning to the intersection of Hayfield and Hendry roads in Kirkcaldy to speak to drivers and passers-by, in the hope of gathering new information.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) are carrying out witness canvassing at the scene exactly one week from the date and time of the incident. They're facilitating traffic stops and approaching passing pedestrians in order to identify any potential witnesses who may have information that could contribute to the investigation into the death, assisted by police vehicles and road policing officers who will manage traffic flow. The contact details of any witnesses identified will be recorded by the PIRC and follow-up interviews carried out week beginning 11 May 2015.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has directed the PIRC to carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 31 year old in Kirkcaldy on Sunday 3 May, who had been detained by police shortly before his death.

A witness appeal was issued on Tuesday 5 May 2015.
