Pair Remanded In Custody

Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court

Two people are to stand trial accused of sex trafficking and brothel keeping after eight alleged victims were rescued at addresses across Scotland.

Raids were carried out at properties in Lanarkshire, Tayside, Fife and Dumfries and Galloway, as part of the operation codenamed Wolfberry last week.

Now a 44-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman are to stand trial accused of a series of offences.

Jose Barbosa and Ana Calder appeared in private at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on petition facing a series of charges.

They are accused of arranging the arrival in the UK of a person with intent to have them work as a prostitute.

A second charge alleges they exercised control, direction or influence over the movements of a prostitute.

And a final charges accuses the pair of living in whole or in part on the earnings of prostitution.

Neither Barbosa or Calder made any plea or declaration during the brief hearing.

The case was fully committed for trial.

A sheriff decided the pair should be granted bail, but both were remanded in custody ahead of a Crown bail appeal to be heard later this week.
