Over one thousand Fife pupils sign up to learn coding

Fife College is offering sets of online classes in coding for primary-aged children.

Primary 5, 6 and 7 students are getting the chance to learn the fundamentals of coding, including HTML and Python.

Fife College is working with InvestFife’s Business Enterprise Team to launch the Virtual Coding Academy.

The academy will oversee two blocks of classes lasting 18 weeks each.

Rebecca Blyth, Academic and Quality Manager of Computing and Technologies at Fife College, said: “I am thrilled to support young learners to develop their essential skills in programming and maths, for futures in a computing and digital world.

"The Virtual Coding Academy is designed to provide young learners, with introductory skills and knowledge of programming. Learners can gain the ability to code using HTML, CSS and Python programming languages, which embeds the meta and employability skills required for our computer programmers of the future.

“Highlighting the potential career opportunities at such a young age and engaging the young student's imagination is key to building their economic future.”

Using Python, the pupils will finish the academy with the ability to use encryption to send secret messages. HTML will allow the learners to draft text and upload images to webpages.
