Orkney Best Place To Bring Up Children

Fife ranked 20th in new study

Fife hasn't scored well in a new study into where to bring up children.

The 2015 Bank of Scotland Children's Quality of Life Survey placed the Kingdom 20th in Scotland because of school class size, high school spending and population density.

On the other hand they found Orkney had the best due to quality of life.  The average primary school class size there is 18 and the pupil to teacher ratio in secondary school is 8.8 comparerd to the average for Birtain 26.4 and 15.5 respectively.

Orkney also has one of the lowest population densities with just 22 people per square kilometre, the averahe is 274. Children can also walk about in relative safety with just 139 vehicles per square kilometre- compared with the average 9,459.

The rest of the Highlands and Islands also faired well with high scores in education and how adults rate their personal well-being.

Nitesh Patel, economist at Bank of Scotland said:

"The north of Scotland has always done well when we’ve looked at Quality of Life indexes so it’s no surprise that Orkney, the Shetland Islands and Western Isles are the top three in the 2015 Bank of Scotland Children’s Quality of Life Index across both Scotland and Great Britain. Children in these areas benefit from low primary school class sizes, low pupil to teacher ratio in secondary schools, excellent exam results and some of the highest school spend per pupil."
