Obesity, Diabetes Costs Rising

Prescribing drugs to treat people for obesity and diabetes is costing the NHS tens of millions of pounds every year, according to research.

The number drugs issued to patients rose by 100 thousand last year, with £2.5million more spent treating the conditions.
 
It cost the health service £75.7million in treatments for the condition last year.

Dealing with obesity is costing the NHS more than £5,000 a day, while the number of items given to those who are heavily overweight jumped from 43,090 in 2012/13 up to 52,412 last year.
 
The ISD Scotland statistics show that 3,340,313 items were dispensed in relation to the disease in 2013/14, an increase of more than 100,000 from 12 months before.

It is estimated around 250,000 people in Scotland are currently living with diabetes, although many more don't know they have it.
