Dunfermline's new cultural centre is to be called the Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries.

The name was chosen at a meeting ot he town's area committee.

The project, part funded by the Heritage Lottery, will deliver a new facility integrated with the surrounding historic listed buildings.

Speaking after the committee meeting, its chair, Councillor Helen Law, said it was lovely to have a name agreed for the facility now that work on the two-year build has begun.

She said: "Members of the committee have known for some time that the naming of the facility would be decided by them and have been speaking to local residents and stakeholders to get their views on what the facility should be called. It’s vital that we capture the sense of the range of cultural services on offer whilst not losing the name ‘Carnegie Library’.

"It’s only right that we retain and celebrate the rich Carnegie history with the world’s first Carnegie Library forming part of this integrated facility. Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries allows us to do just that. It also complements Fife’s other integrated library, museum and art gallery well – the recently refurbished Kirkcaldy Galleries.

"I look forward to seeing work progress on the town centre site throughout 2015. It will undoubtedly help to increase tourism to the area as a great new asset to the Heritage Quarter and wider town centre."

Stuart Cross, Chair of Fife Cultural Trust’s Board welcomed the decision. He said: "I am pleased that this wonderful new facility will have a name which retains the history and heritage of the world’s first Carnegie Library but which also acknowledges the high-quality cultural experience on offer for both Dunfermline residents and visitors to the area."
