Nationwide Spring Clean

People of all ages are being encouraged to clean up Fife throughout April and May.

Keep Scotland Beautiful will be holding spring cleans throughout over the coming weeks.

In its first two years, volunteers helped pick up more than 5, 000 tonnes of litter.

The organisations says it's about changing attitudes to make littering behaviour as unacceptable as drink driving.

Over its first two years, the Clean Up Scotland Campaign has:

  • helped volunteers pick up 5,271 tonnes of litter
  • involved 530,606 participants in clean ups
  • supported an average of 332 clean ups per month
  • registered 50,213 people taking a pledge to do their bit to Clean Up Scotland

Speaking at the launch of the Spring Clean, Derek Robertson, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful said: “Keep Scotland Beautiful welcomes the partnership and support of Greggs for our volunteers across Scotland throughout April and May.  We’re very proud of the hard work all of the volunteers put in and it is truly excellent to see that local environmental quality is being improved with the support of businesses in the community.”

Mr Robertson added: “We live in a great country, with some fantastic communities and brilliant open spaces, but too often the carelessness of others means that litter plagues our environment. Our Spring Clean is the opportunity for everyone in Scotland to join the fightback against litter.

“We want to call on everyone who loves their local environment to join us. We can support you with providing equipment and supporting your efforts, and Greggs will ensure you get that little reward too.

“Don’t let’s pretend we can turn the other cheek, away from the scale of the litter problem we face. We can all play a part in Cleaning Up our treasured local spaces. We need a national effort to make us the cleanest country in Europe, and you can be part of it by signing up for our Spring Clean.”
