Investigation After Dunfermline 'Altercation' Death

Police in Fife are treating a man's death in Dunfermline as suspicious.

A 26-year-old man, named locally as Arif Mahmood, was taken to Queen Margaret Hospital, and then the Victoria in Kirkcaldy, where he later died.

It's after an altercation between Arif and another man who'd been driving a red Vauxhall Astra, and a male and female pedestrian on Queen Anne Street at around 2am yesterday.

Relatives posting tributes to on social media said it was a tragic car accident.

Arif's sister, Sabrina, posted on Facebook: "Just to let everyone know that my brother Arif passed away. He was in a tragic car accident last night."

Police Scotland cannot confirm whether the incident is being treated as murder, and officers are urging anyone who has information to come forward.

Fife Division says it is following positive lines of enquiry.

Detective Inspector Stuart Wilson, leading the investigation, said: “We’d like to reassure the public that we’re pursuing various positive lines of enquiry to ensure the full circumstances around this incident are ascertained.”

“A man has sadly lost his life and we’re asking for any witnesses who saw this incident to come forward as soon as possible.”
