MSP Wants Lower Drink Drive Limit For Lorry Drivers

An MSP is calling for lower drink drive limits for lorry and bus drivers.

An MSP has called for lower drink driving limits for drivers of lorries and buses to ensure those with additional
driving responsibilities are held to a higher standard.

The SNP's Christian Allard has called for a blood alcohol limit of 30mg per 100ml to be introduced for drivers of Large
Goods Vehicles (LGVs) or Passenger Carrying Vehicles (PCVs) to reflect the catastrophic damage that such vehicles
can cause if involved in a collision.

At the start of December, a tougher blood alcohol limit of 50mg per 100ml was introduced in Scotland for all drivers,
bringing Scotland into line with other European countries. It is estimated that around one in ten deaths on Scotland’s
roads involve drivers who are over the legal alcohol limit.

Commenting, SNP MSP Christian Allard said:

“Large vehicles can cause catastrophic damage if they are involved in a collision, so we rightly require a greater
standard of training from the people who drive them.

“An LGV or a bus is the last thing that someone with any trace of alcohol in their system should be driving, so we
should apply the same principle and lower the limit for people driving such vehicles even further.

“There should already be no excuse for someone driving a large vehicle with any trace of alcohol in their system and
that should be reflected in the law.

“I will be writing to the Scottish Government to ask them to study this proposal and I hope that it is one we will see
action on.”
