Meningitis Symptom Reminder After Fife Death

A 19 year old man died from the virus at the weekend.

We're being reminded of the symptoms of meningitis after a 19 year old from West Fife died from the virus.

The young man was taken into hospital on Thursday but died on Saturday.

His family are now being given treatment as a precaution although NHS Fife arent' expecting any more cases.

They say deadly meningitis cases are rare thanks to the success of immunisation programmes.

Chris McGuigan, a consultant in Public Health Medicine at NHS Fife, tells Kingdom FM News: "That's basically prevented a whole lot of these severe consequences, because the vaccines have been so good, and have been accepted by the population so well."

However, we're being told to look out for possible symptoms of the infection including a rash which doesn't disappear when pressed with a glass.

Vomiting, sensitivity to light and a stiff neck could also be signs of the virus.
