Manufacturing Remains Strong

Manufacturing output in Fife has increased to almost £1.2 billion, that's up by 21% since 2012.

The sector accounts for more than 15, 000 jobs in the region alone.

Councillors are welcoming the figures and say initiatives are continuing to ensure young people are training and entering the industry.

Scotland experienced an increase in manufacturing output over the same period, but to a lesser extent than Fife, at around 5%.

Councillor Lesley Laird, Fife Council’s Depute Leader and Executive Spokesperson for Economy and Planning, said: “Manufacturing is a key sector within Fife, accounting for around 15,400 jobs, or 12% of total employment. These new statistics further highlight the contribution that this sector makes to the local economy. Fife contributed the second highest amount of Manufacturing GVA across Scotland’s 32 local authorities in 2013, with a 10% share of Scotland’s £12.5bn total.”

“Manufacturing output growth is good news for local businesses and a positive sign for Fife’s economy. Fife Council works closely with partner organisations such as Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International, to encourage and support the manufacturing sector. A strong manufacturing base is crucial to the growth of the local economy, and more importantly, to sustaining this growth."
