Longannet Talks Break Down

The immediate future of Longannet power station is under renewed threat.

Scottish Power is trying to renegotiate the £40 million it costs to connect to the National Grid, which bases charges on location rather than a flat rate.

The plant's operators say this means the coal-firing station pays ten times as much as a similar facility in South England.

Longannet is set to be decommissioned in 2020, but there are concerns an earlier shut-down could affect Scotland's ability to deal with national power cuts or dips in output.

The facility near Kincardine employs 250 people.
