Library Closures "A Bad Decision"

MP supports campaigners as they continue to fight against the closure

Library campaigners vow the fight will go on.

Fife council recently voted to approve the closure of 16 libraries across the Kingdom. The towns affected include Freuchie, Lundin Links, Colinsburgh, Crail and Pittenweem.

A spokesperson for the cross-community group said:

"There are so many aspects of the 'consultation' that do not add up. We are pleased the executive committee decision has now been 'called in' for further examination to the next meeting of the Council's education, health and social care scrutiny committee on Tuesday, January 5 but disappointed to discover that the Council's procedures mean that we will be denied the chance to speak in person at the meeting. Nevertheless, we will be making detailed written submissions to committee members in advance of this meeting."
He continued: "It was great to meet with representatives from other areas and for each of us to realise that we are not alone. Individually, some communities might have thought that the fight was over, but really the battle has just begun and we'll be doing everything we can to stop these precious local resources from being lost. If they go, no matter how hard we try, we will never have a service like we have now and that will be detrimental to so many communities right across Fife."

Stephen Gethins, MP for North East Fife supports the campaigners, he said:

"The closure of local libraries will be devastating for so many areas and I will continue to support the groups fighting to oppose the plans."
