The leader of the Liberal Democrats at Westminster says families across Fife are facing a "real misery" with the cost of living amid the unfolding crisis in Ukraine.

Sir Ed Davey has been on a visit in the north-east of the Kingdom today alongside the party's Scottish deputy leader and North East Fife MP Wendy Chamberlain.

He says that an "oligarch tax" is needed, alongside a windfall tax on oil and gas firms, to help the most vulnerable struggling with their energy bills in the region, but the Chancellor told MP's earlier this month that while a windfall tax "sounds superficially appealing", the UK Government wants to deal with the issue in a "responsible way".

Rishi Sunak also announced support for 28 million households across the UK, with around £9 billion pledged to help deal with the cost of living.

Sky News reports that the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces has reached the country's capital Kyiv, with the government in Ukraine saying that Russia has lost as many as a thousand personnel, while Russia's defence ministry say that more than 100 Ukrainan military assets have been destroyed.

The UK Government announced a range of new sanctions yesterday targeting Russia, but before that, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned other nations that anyone stopping their actions and threatening their country will "face consequences that" they "have never faced" in history.
