LGBT Young People 'Not Confident' In Reporting Hate Crime

Half of LGBT young people said that they were aware of what their rights are under hate crime legislation.

There's "still a way to go" before young gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people feel safe and protected.

That is according to research by LGBT Youth Scotland, who say they still experience homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in public spaces, including public transport. Only half of young people questioned by the charity are aware of their rights in relation to hate crimes. They discovered a direct correlation between the number of LGBT young people who know their rights and those who would be confident in reporting crimes to the police.

There is also uncertainty over how reports are dealt with by the police. Statistics show that many feel it would improve their confidence to not only see posters raising awareness of hate crime, but to receive information on what happens after a report is taken.
