Labour, Ukip Big Winners in Fife EU Polls

Scotland's political leaders are awaiting the final results of the elections to the European Parliament.

Although voting took place on Thursday, the results could only be announced after 10 o'clock last night, once polls had closed in other EU members states.

In Fife, Labour extended their narrow lead over the SNP, in the last Euro elections the party polled only 200 votes more than the SNP.

This time that gap rose to nearly 2,500 thousand, bucking the Scottish trend.

And Dunfermline MSP Cara Hilton puts it down to September's independence referendum:

The Conservatives saw their vote rise by over 2 thousand, but the big winners were Ukip - who doubled their number of votes.

There was disappointment for the Scottish Liberal Democrats - down from 10,600 to less than 8,000 - leaving them as the Kingdom's 5th political party.

The full Scottish result won't be known until this afternoon, because the Western Isles doesn't count votes on a Sunday.

But the SNP looks likely to claim another election victory here, taking two seats, with Labour getting another two.

The Conservatives are on course for one, while Ukip will gain their first elected representative in Scotland.

Here's the party's Scottish leader Peter Adams:
