Kirkcaldy Fundraiser Receives Medal

Gordon was presented with his medal in Edinburgh

Motor Neurone Disease campaigner Gordon Aikman has been presented with a British Empire Medal.

Gordon was awarded the British Empire Medal by the Lord Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen on Thursday 3rd December.

The 30 year old Fifer was honoured for his services to MND awareness and research. Gordon was diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and has so far raised over £400,000 for research into a cure for the terminal condition.

Gordon has both raised an impressive amount to fund research and also increased awareness of the condition across Scotland and the UK. The BE medal is the latest of many awards for him, he was named one of Kingdom FM's Local heroes in August. The former head boy at Kirkcaldy High School also made the top 100 inspirational people list for the Independent on Sunday and received a honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh. The Prime Minister David Cameron gave him a Points of Light Award.

Gordon said:

“I am absolutely delighted to receive this honour. It might be too late for me, but we can and we must find a cure for future generations. With every day I have left I will be fighting for a world free from MND.”

Here's Gordon after receiving the medal, telling Kingdom FM news what it's like living with MND and what else he's hoping to achieve now:

To donate to Gordon's Fightback text 'MNDS85 £5' to 70070. Every penny raised brings closer the day we find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
