Kirkcaldy Foodbank warns on World Hunger Day more families are in poverty

Kirkcaldy Foodbank is warning on World Hunger Day that more families than ever are going hungry and living in poverty.

The foodbank says it'll only get worse amid rising energy and food prices, with the cost of living crisis continuing to affect many people across Fife.

Earlier this week, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a £15 billion package of targeted support from the UK Government.

Nearly all of the eight million most vulnerable households across the UK will get support worth at least £1,200 this year, including a new one-off cost of living payment worth £650.

Universal support will be at £400, while a levy on oil and gas firms will aim to raise around £5 billion to help with cost of living.

While the levy has been welcomed by a range of organisations, ones like Offshore Energy UK have criticised it, saying that while its essential to support consumers during the crisis, it'll discourage UK offshore energy investments.

Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine is also causing ongoing pressures to worldwide food supply.

Joyce Leggate, chair of the foodbank, says hunger affects all parts of the world, including here at home:
