Human remains have been found near St Michaels in North East Fife.
Police Scotland say the discovery was made in a rural location near Leuchars late last night.
Forensics are currently investigating.
Officers say the enquiry is "at a very early stage and no further information is available at this time",
However, the discovery comes during an ongoing search for missing Newport woman Susan Reid.
The 56-year-old has not been seen since January.
