Holyrood votes on ending corroboration

Kenny MacAskill

MSPs are to debate controversial plans to get rid of the need for corroboration in Scottish courts.

The Scottish Government proposals are facing their first vote at Holyrood. Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill says the current requirement for evidence to come from more than one source means many victims could be denied justice. Police and prosecutors back the move, along with support groups for domestic violence and rape victims. But there's opposition from the legal profession - including from many judges. They warn that the abolition may result in miscarriages of justice.
