GE15: Polling Day

The campaigning and canvassing is over - today millions of people will vote in the general election.

There are a total of four constituencies in Fife, with almost 286, 000 people registered to vote this year. Polling stations will be open from 7am - 10pm. Voters will be asked to place a simply 'X' on the ballot paper next to the candidate of their choice.

The results from the region's four constituencies and beyond are expected to start filtering through from the early hours of Friday morning.

Linda Bissett, depute returning officer for Fife said: “Voting is the most important way for residents to make their voice heard on issues which concern them. It’s their opportunity to exercise their right to help influence and shape who will run the United Kingdom.

”There are 283,4591 voters across Fife who could use their vote in the General Election. I would encourage them to use it and not lose it.”
Polling places will be open from 7am to 10pm and as part of a continuing pilot scheme, this also means that schools being used as polling places will be open to staff and pupils as normal.

“Over the past few years we’ve made significant efforts to reduce the number of schools we use as polling places. Unfortunately, this isn’t always possible. Polling places have to be accessible, of a suitable size and conveniently located for the voters, and in some areas we just don’t have any suitable alternative venues." Added Ms Bissett.

“However, I’m pleased to say that for the General Election and Dunfermline South by-election, 32 out of the 33 schools we’re using as polling places will be open as usual, allowing over 9,500 pupils to be in school that day.

“You may have to use a different door to get in to your polling place but there will be plenty of signs to show you where to go.”

Meanwhile, a by-election is also being held in Dunfermline South. Residents are being asked to select a new Councillor. The outcome of that vote is expected tomorrow lunchtime.
