GE15: Battle For NHS As Campaigning Continues

The NHS takes centre stage today as politicians hit the streets

The NHS is the battleground as General Election campaigning continues this weekend.

Liberal Democrat campaigners are in the Borders reiterating their challenge to the other parties to match their 800 million pound NHS spending commitment. Labour leader Jim Murphy's in Bellshill today - he says the SNP’s plan for full fiscal autonomy would mean the end of the barnett formula in Scotland.

The SNP have challenged the Tories over their unfunded pledge to invest an extra £8 billion in the NHS. SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said:

"Without genuine additional funding these Tory plans will see cuts to services like social care, police and local government - all of which are vital in keeping the pressure off the NHS."

She will visit a soft play centre in East Kilbride today to launch the SNP's manifesto for families.

Elsewhere, Conservative leader Ruth Davidson is Cupar to open a campaign shop and talk down the Lib Dems in the area - saying their rivals have lost two thirds of their Scottish support. The Scottish Young Greens, holding their biggest ever AGM in Glasgow, will launch their youth manifesto. Along with pledges such as a £10 minimum wage by 2020, and more powers for Scotland, they are demanding the removal of benefit sanctions and the abolition of the so-called bedroom tax.
