Fringe Show For MND

Gordon Aikman

Comedy stars will come together tonight to raise laughs and money for motor neurone disease.

Daniel Kitson, Fred MacAulay, Stewart Francis, Stephen K Amos and Tony Law will take to the stage at Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms. The show is part of the Fringe programme.

It's been organised by Kirkcaldy MND patient and campaigner Gordon Aikman. He was diagnosed with MND at the age of 29 and since his diagnosis has raised over £300,000 for research into a cure for the disease.  Gordon has also transformed care for patients with the condition, successfully lobbying First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to double the number of MND nurses and fund them through the NHS.  He received a British Empire Medal in the Queen's Birthday Honours list and an honorary doctorate from Edinburgh University in recognition of his efforts.

Giving a heartfelt speech to the packed crowd at Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms, Gordon said: “Let there be no mistake; MND is a death sentence.  It affects how I eat, how I breathe and it is the reason why I am in this wheelchair at just 30 years old.

“Soon it will kill me.

“It’s too late for me, but with your help there can be hope to find a cure for the next generation.

“I want to say thank you to everyone for coming and to all the amazing performers who have made tonight possible.  It’s with this kind of incredible generosity that we can find a cure.”
