Former UK Prime Minister says families going through one of the worst winters amid rising costs

Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown

Gordon Brown, the former UK Prime Minister, is telling Kingdom FM that families are experiencing one of the worst winters amid economic pressures being caused by rising costs.

The former Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath MP has been expressing his sympathy for families struggling at this time.

It comes while energy costs are increasing and this year is one where cost of living is anticipated to be a major concern for many people.

He also says that the end of the £20 uplift in universal credit has had an impact.

The Department for Work and Pensions says that the uplift, which ended last October after its introduction in March 2020, was only temporary amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Brown has been involved in the recent launch of a campaign by Amazon aiming to help more than 13,000 families across Fife, with The Cottage Family Centre in Kirkcaldy as its lead charity partner.

Anas Hassan, our reporter, has been in conversation with the former PM about that campaign, as well as finding out his thoughts on the forthcoming economic challenges in 2022:
