Flood Prevention Completion Date

Fife Council confirms that works in Dunfermline will be complete by December 2014.

Work has begun on Dunfermline's fated flood prevention system.

Fife Council appointed Willis Bros Civil Engineering Limited last month.

The scheme, which is already £11 million over budget, recently received another £2.6 million to help.

Flood prevention works were due to be completed four years ago - in January the local authority terminated its contract with the contractor Byzak Limited.

Cllr Pat Callaghan, Executive Spokesperson for Environment and Transportation said:

"It's great to see that work has started again on site.

"Last month we appointed Wills Bros Civil Engineering Ltd to finish the flood prevention works. All going well, the job should be completed by December 2014."

The remaining works are in Rex Park and Forth Sreet. In Rex Park to be completed is:

  • flood defence embankments
  • footpath works
  • street lighting
  • the children's playpark and landscaping works.
  • In Forth Street contractors need to finish the structure that’ll allow the flood waters to flow under the road. To complete this work we'll need temporary traffic control to provide safe working room for the Council's contractors.

Cllr Pat Callaghan added:

"I would like to thank the residents of Dunfermline for their continued patience. This project has gone on a lot longer than anyone envisaged, but the end is now in sight."
